Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study of Spontaneous Dynamic Rupture on Frictional Interfaces

Collaborator: Student: X. Lu, Caltech

This is an interdisciplinary program of fracture mechanics and seismology to study fundamental physics of dynamic shear rupture. Applications include delamination of layered composite materials, frictional rupture processes in earthquakes, and sliding between soft membranes in biological systems. The figure shows pulse-like rupture captured by high-speed digital camera and laser velocimeters.
